The Carden Method

The CARDEN METHOD® is a vital educational philosophy with proven teaching techniques applied to a curriculum concerned with the development of the whole student. The Carden curriculum begins with students as young as three-year-old and continues through middle school, each level reinforcing and building upon the strengths gained by the student during the previous year.

Using a highly individualized approach, Carden meets each learner’s particular needs. Students receive the sound, well-rounded education they need to realize their full potential in life. Carden believes that life is a joy, and so should be learning. This attitude promotes a life-long love of learning among Carden students.

The Carden curriculum includes language arts, mathematics, history, science, and geography. A cultural program engenders an appreciation of art and music. A guidance program develops the student by awakening each student to ethical and social values.

The Carden Reading Method

Phonics and Word Structure - The student’s vocabulary is part of their personal mental image of life. There is great joy and satisfaction in applying Carden phonics to read easily, to spell accurately, and to speak clearly. Mastery of the language arts enables youngsters to convey their personal mental images to others with ease. Students are aware of the power that language imparts to them. They develop the self-respect that yields self-esteem.

Word Grouping - Students learn to read thoughts rhythmically. This means they read with a rhythm that helps to impart understanding, whether reading silently for personal enjoyment or reading aloud for the enjoyment of listeners. They learn to group words as they read according to questions for comprehension that the words answer. They are not afraid of grammar. They know how to use it as a tool of comprehension. In school, at home, and elsewhere, they use it when reading, writing, and speaking.

Finding and Expressing the Main Idea - Students prove their understanding by emphasizing the key word of a sentence as they read. The key word determines the main idea of the sentence. They appreciate having valid critical thinking techniques that enable them to choose a key word to justify their choice. Readers use the key word to compose a title that expresses the main idea of a sentence. The key words and titles form the basis for outlining. The ability to organize thought is one of the identifying marks of an educated person.

Carden Academy Mathematics

The Carden Academy advanced mathematics program builds a strong foundation of lifelong skills while meeting the individual needs of each student. Addressing the uniqueness of each student is paramount to the success of a child in school.

Recent and past studies have proven that children in their formative years need to acquire mathematical abilities in a careful, sequential method without the use of aides like calculators that enhance speed but deprive the student of conceptual learning. Mastering fundamental tools is crucial to mastery of any skill. This has been a basic premise and and integral part of Carden Academy for almost four decades.

This is why we have carefully coupled the Carden teaching techniques with the Sadlier-Oxford Mathematics text, thereby ensuring adherence to current national standards as well as providing students with a strong grasp of mathematics. Each concept is mastered, rather than just merely introduced.

Addition, subtraction, estimating, rounding, numeration, whole number operations, monetary transactions, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, measurement, ratio and percentages, statistics, and probability are some of the math concepts covered in the lower grades. Algebra and Geometry are covered in Grades 6-8.

Science Through Experience

Carden Academy’s science program is experiential. We want students to experience, see, and touch what they learn in the classroom. To have the student observe science up close, outside the traditional four-wall approach, is an integral part of the science curriculum. To facilitate this, each grade level has weekly labs and planned field trips to various locations to reinforce the classroom presentation.

Just as important is the foundation the pupil receives from the teacher. This two-point process, inside and outside the classroom, allows the student the opportunity to enjoy a well-rounded learning approach.

To accomplish these goals, we are using the Diamond edition of the Scott Foresman Science curriculum. This program compliments the Carden method with inquiry-rich content using cross-curricular ties linking reading and science together.

As a result of this carefully well-rounded approach, our students receive honors and advanced placement in the high schools they choose to attend.
